Harry and Meghan's Colombia tour in full - outfits, visits and music festival (2024)

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are set to head off on their travels once again - this time to Colombia.

The Sussexes are set to visit the South American country, notorious for its crime rate, this summer for four days after being invited by the nation's vice president. The trip to Colombia will be their second official tour of the year after they visited Nigeria in May taking part in a range of activities over three days.

The royal couple are due to touch down in the Colombian capital of Bogota tomorrow (Thursday, August 15), before heading to the coastal city of Cartagena the following day. Their trip will include attending a prominent music festival and visiting a town with a harrowing past.

Here's what we know so far...

Where are Harry and Meghan visiting?

The four-day trip will see Harry and Meghan head to three different locations in Colombia. One of them is the South American country's capital Bogota, while the other cities are Cali and Cartagena. Cali is a city southwest of Bogota and is known for its salsa dancing clubs, while Cartagena is a port city on Colombia's Caribbean coast with beautiful beaches.

The UK's Foreign Office advises against travel to certain parts of Colombia, while the United States State Department advises citizens to reconsider plans to travel there and urges people to "exercise increased caution due to civil unrest and kidnapping". The trip is likely to see them guarded by heavy security.

Why are Harry and Meghan going to Colombia?

Harry and Meghan will fly in at the invitation of vice-president Francia Márquez, who serves as equality minister. The jaunt will take place this summer, ahead of the first Global Ministerial Conference on Ending Violence Against Children, which is set to be held in Colombia this November.

They have also formed a relationship with Colombia, which is the only country in Latin America to have participated in the Invictus Games, which Harry founded.

Speaking about the Colombia trip, a source told the Mirror: "Harry and Meghan will carry out a series of engagements aligned to the work of their Foundation and lifelong philanthropic endeavours. The visit is part of their ongoing commitment to global philanthropy, building on their previous work in various countries and continuing their efforts to make a positive impact worldwide."

What are Harry and Meghan going to be doing there?

While in Colombia, Harry and Meghan, who has Nigerian heritage, will be visiting the first 'free town' for Africans in the Americas. On Saturday, the pair will be shown around San Basilio de Palenque - a small town with an important history.

Located about one hour's drive southeast of Cartagena, San Basilio de Palenque was once one of the walled communities - known as Palenques - founded by escaped slaves back in the seventeenth century. Nowadays it is known for its rich, unique culture - heavily influenced by residents' African heritage. In 2008, UNESCO declared the town, populated by around 3,500 inhabitants, and its cultural space an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This is partly in recognition of the Palenque language - Palenquero - being the only Spanish-based creole language in Latin America, where it is spoken by some 3,000 people.

The majority of secret Palenque villages were discovered and destroyed by the Spanish, however, San Basilio de Palenque, which was founded by escaped slave Domingo Benkos Bioho, survived, and is now a popular tourist destination. Visitors can take the opportunity to learn Palenquero, learn about traditional hairstyles, and sample fusions of African, Caribbean, European and American cuisine - including fried fish, coconuts and mango salsa.

Music festival

According to city mayor Alejandro Eder, the Sussexes will also be attending a Cali-based music festival called the Petronio Alvarez Festival on Sunday, August 18. Founded in 1997, the festival takes place every August at a sports complex called Unidad Deportiva Alberto Galinda and has evolved into a significant celebration of Afro-Colombian music and culture in Latin America.

Earlier this month, Mr Eder spoke of Harry and Meghan's plans at a tourism conference, stating: "They are going to come to Cali and spend a day in the city. They're going to visit the Petronio Alvarez Festival in the city and they're also going to visit other social initiatives."

The director of last year's festival, Ana Copete, said at the time: "What this festival has done in the past 27 years is to tell Colombia and the world that we are a multi-ethnic and multicultural country. We, as Afro-Colombians, have forged the identity of this country; we have built this country, hand in hand with others. And we deserve the dignity of our culture, not only as folklore but as a way of life."

However, Addo Obed Possu, who makes drums and other instruments, last year criticised the festival, claiming it had become too political. Citing the inclusion of big acts like salsa band Grupo Niche, which he felt had nothing to do with the musical culture, Mr Possu was quoted as saying: "It takes away funds from a black musician, who comes from the deep territories of the Pacific Coast, to perform traditional music and be on the spotlight during the festival. For example, with the amount of money they pay Grupo Niche, they could double the pay of each of the groups that come from the four participating regions."

What will Meghan wear during the tour?

During the couple's last trip, which was to Nigeria, Meghan stunned in a range of playful maxi dresses and smart gowns, which also included pieces by local designers. And it could be that during the visit to Colombia, Meghan sticks to the same fashion formula.

However, one designer she is almost certain to wear is seemingly one of her favourites - and also has a connection to Colombia. In recent months, Meghan has worn several pieces from Colombian designer Johanna Ortiz - and could choose more pieces while visiting the designer's home country.

Johanna Ortiz dresses Meghan has worn in the past include the memorable gold sleeveless dress she sported at the Ms Foundation awards and she also wore the designer on several occasions during the trip to Nigeria in May.

Royal reaction to the tour

During Harry and Meghan's last major overseas trip to Nigeria in May, they received a rapturous reception during three days of events. It led many to wonder how the royals, including King Charles and Prince William, would react given their trip had many of the hallmarks of a traditional royal tour.

However, according to one columnist, the royals won't be upset by the Sussexes upcoming jaunt - as they had a very different fear altogether and in fact, those at the palace were more concerned about the couple popping up at the Paris Olympics.

According to the Daily Mail's Ephraim Hardcastle column: "Harry and Meghan's trip to Colombia later this year won't upset the King and the Prince of Wales. They feared the Sussex duo might choose a different destination: a headline-stealing jaunt to the Paris Olympics.

"Monarchs and crown princes from across the globe have been in the French capital along with Hollywood royalty. The presence of Harry and Meghan would not have amused Charles or his heir. "
